Wangdue Phodrang is a district in western Bhutan and which borders to central Bhutan. The name Wangdue Phodrang is said to be given by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel who was in search of the best location to build a dzong which now stands. However the dzong got burnt down in 2012 and hence till present day it’s under reconstruction. Wangdue Phodrang lies at an altitude of 1300m.
Phobijikha valley is one of the most favorite tourist destinations under Wangdue Phodrang district. Phobijikha valley is a vast valley with traditional house and greeneries all around. The place is also famous for flowers and birds. Black Necked Cranes are winter visitors and they normally fly into Phobijikha valley in late October and fly back to Tibet in late February. One of the unique about the Black Necked crane is when they fly from Tibet to Phobijikha they are seen to make three circle of the Gangtay Monastery before landing on the ground and repeat the same before flying back to Tibet.
